Practicum
Candidates for AMS certification must complete a 1080 hour practicum experience at an approved site. This may be in the form of a self-directed practicum in your own classroom or under the direction of a supervising teacher. A separate practicum at the Elementary II level is not required by AMS if one was completed at the Elementary I level. Practicum sites are urged to affiliate with the American Montessori Society School. Affiliation information is available from www.amshq.org. During the practicum experience, certification students complete assignments related to observation, record-keeping, and management and will be observed and evaluated three times by a representative of Seacoast Center. Individuals whose practicum site lies more than 50 miles from the Seacoast Center office in Stratham may be subject to additional practicum travel expenses. These expenses may be reduced or eliminated by the student's cooperation in identifying qualified local field consultants. The practicum requirement may be fulfilled over one or more academic year, subject to limits on course completion imposed by AMS. Generally, students receive a total of three visits during a two year period unless they request a different schedule due to relocation or extenuating circumstances. |
