PRACTICUM

Candidates for AMS certification must complete a 1080 hour practicum experience at an approved site. This may be in the form of a self-directed practicum in your own classroom or under the direction of a supervising teacher. A separate practicum at the Elementary II level is not required by AMS if one was completed at the Elementary I level.

Practicum sites are urged to affiliate with the American Montessori Society School. Affiliation information is available from www.amshq.org.

During the practicum experience, certification students complete assignments related to observation, record-keeping, and management and will be observed and evaluated three times by a representative of Seacoast Center. Individuals whose practicum site lies more than 50 miles from the Seacoast Center office in Stratham may be subject to additional practicum travel expenses. These expenses may be reduced or eliminated by the student's cooperation in identifying qualified local field consultants.

The practicum requirement may be fulfilled over one or more academic year, subject to limits on course completion imposed by AMS. Generally, students receive a total of three visits during a two year period unless they request a different schedule due to relocation or extenuating circumstances.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

Attendance at all sessions is required. Academic requirements include written and practical examinations., completion of group and individual projects, and enhancement of basic teaching manuals. AMS requires submission of all assignments within two years of course completion.

PLACEMENT

Seacoast Center for Education offers no formal placement services. Most of our students come to us having already established a relationship with a school, although this is not required for acceptance into our program. We maintain in our office a public file of positions that have come to our attention. It remains the responsibility of the student to locate an acceptable practicum site and to fulfill all requirements for employment. Neither employment nor salary levels can be guaranteed by Seacoast Center for Education.

HOUSING

As a courtesy, we maintain awareness of local housing options for each program site and will assist course participants to the best of our ability. Seacoast Center cannot be responsible for housing for course participants.
